Building community connections and support
The FGLIF Mentorship Program creates opportunities for individuals in various ancient studies fields to connect with each another, share experiences, and find support across different career stages.
Since FGLIF’s inception, we have heard from many members of our community about the value of having more individualized and regular opportunities for mentorship and support. The FGLIF Mentorship Program is one way we hope to address this need.
We recognize that mentorship can take many different forms. For some people, it might mean having someone to talk to about graduate school or navigating an academic career. For others, it might mean discussing career options, professional opportunities, or simply having someone who understands some of the experiences that can come with being a first-generation and/or low-income scholar.
Our goal is to foster meaningful connections within our community and to create opportunities for participants to share experiences, exchange advice, ask questions, and support one another.
How does the program work?
The program is open to members of the FGLIF community who would like to participate as Mentors, Mentees, or both.
Mentors
Mentors may be faculty members, professionals, graduate students, or others who have experiences, knowledge, or perspectives they would like to share with another member of the community.
Mentorship might include conversations about:
- Graduate school and academic life
- Navigating academic careers
- Professional and career opportunities
- Working outside the academy
- Research and professional development
- Experiences as a first-generation and/or low-income scholar
- Or simply having someone to talk to who understands some of these experiences
Mentees
Mentees may be students, early-career scholars, or anyone looking for guidance, conversation, or connection as they navigate their own path through ancient studies and beyond.
You don’t need to have a specific problem or question in mind to participate. Sometimes, having someone to talk to about your experiences and plans can be valuable in itself.
Mentors and Mentees
We encourage participants to think of mentorship as a mutual relationship. Mentors bring their own experiences and perspectives, while mentees bring their own questions, experiences, and knowledge to the conversation.
You are also welcome to participate as both a mentor and a mentee.
